A naming ceremony is a fantastic way to welcome a new baby, or child into a family. It’s a non-religious celebration for family and friends to come together to welcome a child into their home.
Often referred to as baby naming ceremonies, the celebration isn’t just to welcome a young baby into their family, but also to celebrate the adoption of children into their lifelong families, or step-children.
Often arranged by parents or guardians, there is no age limit to hold such ceremonies, and they can be held for several babies and/or children.
A fantastic way to celebrate the expansion of families, you can hold your ceremony anywhere you feel most comfortable.
As a celebrant covering the Scottish Borders, Carlisle, Newcastle, and Edinburgh, I am honoured to conduct naming ceremonies on behalf of many babies, children, and teenagers. Many of which bring their own unique celebrations to the day.
What happens on the day?
Simply put, anything you would like. Some may choose to celebrate with music, singing or perhaps, poems. Appointed “guideparents”, together with parents/guardians make their promises to the child/ren, whilst some may even action something symbolic such as signing a certificate, planting a tree or making wishes. The naming ceremony for your loved one/s can be exactly as you would like to be, making it wonderfully unique and special to your family. It can be as grand or as stripped-back as you’d like, I can provide you with a framework, giving you full-reign to tailor the naming ceremony as you wish.
Readings for your naming ceremony
The wonderful thing about holding your non-religious naming ceremony, means you can have readings incorporated into the big day of your child/ren. We’ve found some perfect readings that might just compliment your day.

KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!
Us Two, AA Milne
“I wasn’t afraid,” said Pooh, said he,
“I’m never afraid with you.”
So wherever I am, there’s always Pooh,
There’s always Pooh and Me.
“What would I do?” I said to Pooh,
“If it wasn’t for you,” and Pooh said: “True,
It isn’t much fun for One, but Two,
Can stick together, says Pooh, says he. “That’s how it is,” says Pooh.
A Wee Bit of Heaven, Helen Steiner Rice
A wee bit of heaven
drifted down from above-
A handful of happiness,
a heart full of love.
The mystery of life,
so sacred and sweet-
The giver of joy
so deep and complete.
Precious and priceless,
so lovable, too-
The world’s sweetest miracle,
baby, is you.
